The resort that taught Bali what a clifftop wedding looks like. WOHA designed it in 2009 as a grid of volcanic-stone walls and lava-rock roofs stepping down a limestone headland on the southern Bukit, and it has been the reference point for every cliff venue built since. There are 84 villas, each with its own pool, and the architecture is deliberately hard-edged: no thatch, no frangipani, just stone, water and the drop. The ceremony space is the Bale Kambang, a glass-walled pavilion cantilevered out over the cliff about 100 metres above the Indian Ocean, and it seats a small group with the horizon filling three walls. Dinner moves to the Cliff Edge Cabana lawn or the deck beside the 50-metre pool, where 100 is the working ceiling. Alila joined Hyatt in 2018 and the wedding team is in-house. Two things to know before you book: the site is exposed, so an afternoon in July can be genuinely windy, and the villas are reached by a long run of steps cut into the cliff, which matters if any of your guests cannot manage stairs. Lombok’s answer to a Bali resort wedding, on a stretch of white sand at Sire on the northwest coast that most people have never heard of. Tugu Lombok is the sister of Hotel Tugu Bali and works the same way: it is built around Anhar Setjadibrata’s collection of Indonesian art and antiques, and the buildings exist to hold them. The signature space is the Bale Kokok Pletok, an open-air hall under a thatched roof about 15 metres high, looking out over a lotus pond to the sea. The Beach Front Lawn is the larger option, quoted at 250 standing or 125 seated, with Mount Rinjani behind you and the Gili Islands and Bali’s Mount Agung across the water in front. There are around 20 suites and villas, so this is a venue where the party sleeps mostly off site or takes over the nearby Sire hotels. The reason to come is that Lombok is quieter, cheaper and emptier than Bali, and a beach here on a Saturday afternoon has nobody on it. The reason to think twice is the transfer: Lombok’s airport is two hours south.

The fourth is the strangest and the best: AYANA Lako di’a, a nine-cabin traditional phinisi sailing ship moored off the resort, whose main deck holds up to 150 for a reception, and which then sails your guests into the national park the next morning. The practical constraint is flights. Komodo Airport (LBJ) is domestic, so every international guest connects through Denpasar or Jakarta, and the resort is the only property of its scale in town.
