A pink neo-rococo palace in a village 10 minutes north of Faro, built for the Viscount of Estói in the 19th century, left to fall down for most of the 20th, and reopened in 2009 as a 63-room Pousada with the original palace at the front and a modern wing behind. The gardens are the reason to come: three descending terraces of clipped box, marble statues, tiled staircases and fountains, laid out under French influence and pointed at the hills. Ceremonies are held in the São José chapel on site or in the village church, drinks on the terraces, and dinner in the neo-rococo and neoclassical halls, which seat up to 50, or on the meadow garden, which takes up to 170. This is the cheapest way in Portugal to marry inside a genuine palace with 63 rooms of your own behind it. The trade is that the Pousada is a public hotel with day visitors in the gardens, so exclusivity is bought rather than assumed, and the grand halls are small; anything over 50 seated goes outside.
