01 · In a sentence

São Lourenço do Barrocal in Monsaraz, open May – August.

A 780-hectare farm below the walled hill town of Monsaraz, held by the same family for eight generations and rebuilt as a hotel by José Antonio Uchôa and the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, who won the Pritzker Prize.

What was a village of farm buildings is now 40 rooms and cottages around the same courtyards, with the olive mill, the winery and the stables kept as rooms you can eat in.

Ceremonies happen under holm oaks that are older than the family’s tenure, or in the 200-year-old olive-mill room when the wind is up.

Dinner is in the mill or the winery, cooked from the estate’s own vegetables, lamb and wine.

07 · Questions

Asked along the way.

How many guests does Barrocal take?+

Weddings here run at 30 to 80 guests, with a full-property takeover possible at the top of that range across the estate’s 40 keys. It is not a venue for 150; the buildings and the service model are built for a small party over several days.

Do we have to book the whole estate?+

Larger weddings take the property exclusively, and most weddings here run two to four nights whether or not they buy out every room. Semi-exclusive use is possible at smaller numbers and in shoulder season. Confirm the terms in writing.

Where do the ceremony and dinner happen?+

Ceremonies are held under the old holm oaks, out on the plain, or inside the 200-year-old olive-mill room. Drinks spread through the gardens and the kitchen garden, and dinner sits in the mill or the winery rooms.

What is the weather like?+

The Alentejo plain is the hottest part of Portugal and regularly passes 38 degrees in July and August, which is why most weddings here fall in May, June, September or October. Winter is cold and beautiful, with the estate very quiet.

How do guests get to Monsaraz?+

Lisbon airport is about one hour forty-five by car, and Badajoz across the Spanish border is closer but has almost no flights. There is no train. Guests either drive or come on a coach from Lisbon or Évora, which is 50 minutes away.
