The Yeatman in Vila Nova de Gaia, open June – September.

A hotel built into the hillside of port lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, facing back across the Douro at the whole of Porto.

Every one of the 109 rooms has that view and its own terrace, which is unusual enough that it decides most bookings.

The Yeatman is owned by the Fladgate Partnership, the port house behind Taylor’s and Fonseca, and it is a Relais & Châteaux property with a two-Michelin-star restaurant and a wine cellar of Portuguese bottles that runs to five figures.

For weddings there are twelve event rooms, including the Orangerie and the light-filled Winter Garden, and terraces stepping down the hill.

07 · Questions

Asked along the way.

How many guests can The Yeatman host?+

The hotel lists twelve event rooms with a combined maximum of 350 people. Individual spaces are smaller: the Winter Garden takes about 100 for a standing reception, so a large seated wedding uses several rooms together.

Do the rooms really all have the view?+

Yes. All 109 rooms and suites face Porto across the Douro and have their own terrace, which is the hotel’s defining feature and the reason guests remember the stay rather than the reception room.

Where can the ceremony happen?+

On the terraces stepping down the hillside, with Porto opposite, or indoors in the Orangerie or the Winter Garden if the weather turns. Porto and Gaia both have churches within a few minutes for a religious ceremony.

What do guests do in Porto?+

The port lodges are on the doorstep, Taylor’s and Graham’s included, the Ribeira is five minutes across the bridge, and the Serralves museum and the beaches at Foz are within twenty. It is the easiest city-based weekend in this collection.

How far is Porto airport?+

About 25 minutes by car outside rush hour. Porto has direct flights from most of Europe and a metro line from the airport into the city, which makes it the cheapest arrival point of any venue on this list.
