Le Ciel is not a hotel, which is the whole point of it. It is a venue built for weddings on the caldera rim at Imerovigli, a terrace and an indoor room and nothing else, so the day does not have to work around other guests, a restaurant service or a pool that stays open. The outdoor terrace holds the ceremony and the drinks that follow, facing the volcano and the sunset. Behind it sits an air-conditioned, sound-insulated indoor room, which is the reason planners keep putting couples here: on an island where most dinners end early because the neighbours are ten metres away, this one can carry on. Planner listings put the ceremony at about 80 seated outside and the reception at up to 100 seated at ten round tables, with standing numbers higher. The trade-off against a hotel is that nobody sleeps here. Guests stay along the rim in Imerovigli and Fira, and someone has to organise the walk or the cars, because the caldera path is not a route for heels in the dark.

Santo Wines is the island’s cooperative winery, above Pyrgos on the caldera side, and it is where a Santorini wedding goes when the guest list outgrows a cliff terrace. The tasting terraces step down the slope with the caldera and the volcano in front of them, and the scale of the place means a hundred-odd people can stand with a glass without anyone queueing on a staircase. Ceremonies happen outside on the terrace; the reception moves to the indoor hall, which the winery quotes for events of around 110 people. Two things to plan for. Food is not automatic: the winery hosts the reception but catering is arranged with an outside company, so your planner is booking a caterer as well as a room. And Santo is a working visitor attraction with a busy sunset trade, so exclusivity is a question to ask early rather than assume. What you get in return is the cheapest way on this island to put a large group in front of the view, plus the wine, which is grown on the same volcanic soil you are standing on.

The larger and newer half of the Canaves collection, set on the quiet western edge of Oia above the fishing hamlet of Ammoudi, away from the crush that fills the village lanes at sunset. Where the original Canaves Oia Suites is a cliff of cave rooms, Epitome is built out across a slope in cut stone and pale plaster, with private pools on most of the suites and enough flat ground to seat a wedding properly. Ceremonies happen on the Sunset Terrace, the flat roof of Elements restaurant, with the caldera and the volcano straight ahead. Dinner moves either onto the same terrace or down to the pool deck when the party is bigger. Canaves runs the whole thing through its own events team, so there is no external caterer to coordinate and the kitchen is the one you ate in the night before. Two honest caveats: the terrace seats 25 comfortably and the number only climbs with the pool area added, so a 60-guest wedding is a two-space wedding here, not one; and Oia in July and August is a slow-moving crowd, which is worth knowing before you plan an arrival convoy for guests.
