01 · In a sentence

Villa del Balbianello in Lenno, open July – August, November – December.

A late eighteenth-century villa on the tip of the Dosso d’Avedo peninsula, left to FAI, the Italian national trust, by the explorer Guido Monzino in 1988 and open to the public as a museum.

It is the most recognisable building on Lake Como: the loggia with its three arches and the plane trees clipped flat over the terrace have carried two Star Wars films and a Bond.

Weddings happen in the Loggia Durini, which takes about 60 seated chairs, with the aperitivo on the Loggia Segrè and dinner on the terraces below.

07 · Questions

Asked along the way.

How many guests fit at Villa del Balbianello?+

The Loggia Durini holds about 60 seated chairs, which is the firm ceremony number. FAI prices in bands up to 50 guests and over 50 guests, and anything materially larger is agreed case by case using the terraces for dinner rather than the loggia.

What does it cost to hire the villa?+

FAI publishes a rental schedule rather than a wedding package. Planner-reported 2026 figures run from about €2,700 for a small ceremony inside public opening hours to roughly €9,800 plus VAT for a two-hour ceremony for 50 guests outside them, with dinner hire quoted separately and reaching well into five figures.

Can you legally marry at Villa del Balbianello?+

No. FAI does not host legal civil marriages here. Couples complete the legal paperwork at a Lake Como town hall or in their home country, and hold the ceremony that matters in the loggia. Every planner on the lake handles this as routine.

How do guests reach the villa?+

By private boat from Lenno, which takes a few minutes across the bay. There is no vehicle access to the property, and the walking path from Lenno is long and steep, so boats are how a wedding party arrives and leaves.

Where do guests stay?+

Nowhere on site. The villa is a museum with no rooms. Wedding parties book in Lenno and Tremezzo a few minutes away, or across the water in Bellagio and Varenna, and the hotel becomes the base for the welcome dinner and the morning after.

Can you choose your own caterer?+

No. Only caterers on FAI’s approved list may work at the villa, which protects a historic house but narrows your options and your negotiating room. Confirm the current list before you fall for a menu somewhere else.
