01 · In a sentence

Castello di Guarene in Guarene, open July – September, November.

Count Carlo Giacinto Roero began rebuilding the medieval manor above Guarene in 1726 and turned it into a baroque summer residence, and in 2016 it opened as a fifteen-room hotel with a museum of its own history still inside it.

It sits on the ridge between the Roero and the Langhe, with formal Italian gardens on the terrace and the UNESCO vineyards running away below: Alba and the truffle market are eight kilometres south, Barolo and Barbaresco within half an hour.

For a wedding the Orangerie takes up to 140, the state rooms handle up to about 90, and the gardens hold the ceremony with the hills behind it.

Piedmont is the least booked of Italy’s serious wedding regions, which is the argument for it.

07 · Questions

Asked along the way.

How many guests can Castello di Guarene hold?+

Up to about 140 in the Orangerie, which is the largest space, and around 90 in the castle’s state rooms. The gardens take the ceremony and the aperitivo, so a wedding moves outdoors and in across the evening.

Can guests stay at the castle?+

Fifteen rooms and suites, so roughly thirty people sleep on site. Everyone else stays in Alba eight kilometres away or in the wine villages of the Langhe and the Roero, most of them within twenty minutes by car.

When is the best time of year in Piedmont?+

Late September to early November, which is the opposite of most of Italy. The grape harvest and the Alba white truffle season fall then, the light on the Langhe is at its best and the region’s restaurants are at full strength. Summer is warm and quieter.

Which airport should guests use?+

Turin Caselle is about 70 km and an hour away and is the closest. Milan Malpensa is around two hours and has far more long-haul routes, so most international guests land there and drive down through the wine country.

What does a wedding here cost?+

The castle quotes by proposal and publishes no prices. Piedmont runs below Tuscany and well below Lake Como for the same standard, and planners put a hundred-guest wedding at this level in the region of €70,000 to €140,000 all in.

What is there for guests to do?+

Barolo, Barbaresco and the Roero wineries are within half an hour, Alba has the truffle market from October, and the castle keeps a museum of its own history. This is a region guests extend their trip for rather than fly in and out of.
