Grand Hotel Des Iles Borromees in Stresa is a hotel with declared wedding services and three types of event space: conference space, a conference center, and a banquet hall.

Accommodation runs from a Double or Twin Room with Garden View through to the Imperial Suite and the one-bedroom Royal Suite with Lake View, with all five listed room types holding a maximum of 2 guests each.

The nearest airport is Milan Malpensa (MXP), which we estimate at around 50 minutes by road.

Rooms are estimated at roughly EUR 320 to EUR 900 per night, and the setting is what we would describe as a historic, formal lakeside address.

We stayed for four nights as a couple and regularly stay in five-star hotels, so our expectations are based on experience rather than luxury for its own sake. We value genuine hospitality, attention to detail, and consistent service. Unfortunately, this hotel fell well short of those expectations. The room was noticeably smaller and less well equipped than the photos on the website suggested. There was no seating area, no kettle or coffee-making facilities, and the overall condition left much to be desired. For example, the built-in wardrobe was partially detached from the wall. Housekeeping was inconsistent throughout our stay. At one point we even had to collect our own toilet paper because it had not been replenished. The rooms are also extremely poorly soundproofed. Conversations from neighboring rooms are clearly audible, and the constant slamming of doors makes it difficult to relax in the evening. The biggest disappointment, however, was the lack of hospitality at reception. On several occasions, staff remained seated in the back office instead of coming to the front desk when guests approached with questions. This is simply not the level of service one expects from a five-star hotel. The wellness area was clean and well maintained, and the gym was modern and well equipped. These were among the few highlights of our stay. Breakfast was mediocre. While there was fresh fruit, the selection of pastries, cheese, and cold cuts was rather limited. The scrambled eggs were clearly made from a pre-prepared mix and were of poor quality. While freshly prepared egg dishes could be ordered, this was never communicated by the staff. In most five-star hotels, guests are either informed upon seating or provided with a breakfast menu outlining the available à la carte options. Dirty plates, cutlery, and glasses were also a recurring issue. Overall, the hotel falls short in too many areas that should be basic standards for a five-star property. While there are some positive aspects, particularly the wellness area and gym, the lack of attention to detail, poor housekeeping, and disappointing service make it difficult to justify either the hotel’s rating or its price.
