Dunton Hot Springs
Dolores · Resort
Dunton is a ghost town from 1885 that somebody bought and put back together. Thirteen hand-built log cabins sit along the West Fork of the Dolores River in the San Juan Mountains at about 8,900 feet, and between them are a saloon with Butch Cassidy’s name carved into the bar, a chapel, a bathhouse over the hot spring, and a dance hall. The whole town sleeps 44 people, and any wedding over 14 guests takes the whole town. That is the clearest thing about this venue: you are not booking a room block, you are renting a village. Buyout rates are published at $40,000 a night with a two-night minimum in winter and spring, and $60,000 a night with a three-night minimum in summer and autumn, and the rate is close to all-inclusive: every meal, drinks outside the reserve wine list, the hot springs, the horses, the bikes and the guiding are in it. Getting there is the trade. The last miles are dirt road, Telluride is an hour over the pass and closes in bad weather, and there is no mobile signal once you drop into the valley. Guests who make it tend to describe the weekend as the best one they have had.

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai
Kailua-Kona · Resort
Hualalai opened in 1996 at Historic Kaupulehu, on the black lava coast fifteen minutes north of Kona airport, and it is the quietest of the big Hawaii resorts. There are no towers: 243 rooms sit in two-storey bungalows scattered through gardens and lava fields, and seven pools are spread far enough apart that you can find one to yourself. King’s Pond is the one guests remember, 1.8 million gallons cut into the lava and stocked with reef fish you can swim with. Ceremonies happen on the bluff at the Wedding Tree, which holds about 30, or on the lawns and the eighteenth fairway when the guest list is larger. Four Seasons publishes wedding packages here rather than a room-by-room price list: from $12,500 for the Ke Aloha package for up to 20 guests, $13,500 for Pili a Hualalai and $21,500 for Wai Maoli o Hualalai, the last two with no stated guest ceiling. That is also the honest caveat. The resort does not publish a seated maximum for a reception, so if you are planning for more than about 60 the number to confirm first is the one for the space you want, not the package.

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea
Wailea · Resort
The Four Seasons opened at Wailea in 1990 on the south shore of Maui, on a stretch of Wailea Beach that faces west across the channel to Lanai and Kahoolawe. It is the resort most planners name first when a couple says Hawaii, and the reason is the ceremony sites. Plumeria Point is a small grassed point inside the sculpture garden, under an arbour of plumeria trees, holding about 40 guests with the fountains and the Kahalawai mountains behind. The oceanfront lawn takes far more, up to 500 standing for a reception, which is where the bigger Maui weddings happen. Published wedding catering runs to $400 a head for a cocktail hour and dinner reception, $200 for a welcome reception and $125 for brunch, and a weekday elopement for up to ten people is $11,500. The honest caveat is scale. This is a 383-room resort and it cannot be bought out, so your guests share the pools and the beach path with everybody else staying that week. What you get in exchange is a property that can absorb a hundred guests without anything feeling improvised, and Kahului airport 35 minutes up the road.
