A Lake Tahoe wedding or elopement: packages, costs and licenses.

Getting married in Lake Tahoe takes one marriage license, from the state where you say your vows: California for South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Truckee and the west shore, Nevada for Stateline, Zephyr Cove and Incline Village. A license from one state is not valid in the other.

The state matters and the county does not: a California license bought in any county works anywhere in California, and a Nevada license anywhere in Nevada, so use the office that is easiest to reach. Neither state requires a blood test or a waiting period, and California does not require residency.

An El Dorado County marriage license costs $80 for a public license or $85 for a confidential one, is issued by appointment only, and is valid for 90 days.

• South Lake Tahoe office: 3368 Lake Tahoe Blvd. #108, open Thursdays only, 9:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., closed noon to 1 p.m.
• Placerville office: 360 Fair Lane, Monday to Friday by appointment, which the county suggests for couples flying into Sacramento.
• Booking: complete the application online, then book on the county's marriage license page or call 530-621-5490.
• Bring: photo ID for both of you and, if either was married before, the date and manner that marriage ended. If either of you was divorced in the last 90 days, bring a certified copy of the final decree. Both of you must be able to communicate in English; if you need a translator, contact the office first.

A confidential license needs no witnesses, but you must already live together.

A Douglas County marriage license costs $85, has no waiting period and no blood test, and is good for one year. A certified copy of the certificate is $15 more.

The lake office is Tahoe General Services, 175 Hwy 50, 2nd Floor, Stateline, (775) 586-7270, open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed noon to 1 p.m. Appointments are required, and Douglas County asks you to complete its online application first. Both of you appear with proof of age (a driver's license or passport), and couples from outside the US follow the same rules.

Incline Village is in Washoe County, which stopped issuing licenses at its Incline Village office on May 29, 2026. For a wedding there, use Stateline or Washoe's Reno bureau at 1001 E 9th St, which charges $85 and needs no appointment.

A Lake Tahoe elopement takes four things: a license from the state you will stand in, an officiant, a witness in most cases, and a place where ceremonies are allowed.

1. License. Book the appointment first. In South Lake Tahoe the Thursday-only office sets your arrival day.
2. Officiant. Hire one or ask a friend. El Dorado County deputizes a friend for one ceremony for $50, in person. In Nevada a friend needs a single-ceremony certificate from the clerk of the county where you marry: Douglas County charges $30 and wants a notarized application and affidavit of authority at least three weeks ahead.
3. Witness. Nevada requires one besides the officiant. California requires one unless the license is confidential.
4. Place. On National Forest land, fewer than 75 people with no paid vendors need no permit. Paid vendors make it commercial, so hire one that works under a Forest Service special use permit.

Lake Tahoe elopement packages are published from $425 for an officiant alone and $725 with an hour of photography; a Lake Tahoe micro wedding package from a hotel adds a ceremony space and a short reception from $3,500. These are sellers' published prices, not a market survey.

The Forest Service lists Chapel of the Pines as a permitted wedding provider. The Landing's package is a winter offer, last posted for February 13 to April 20; its weddings page says the hotel otherwise cannot host elopements or very small weddings. No price here includes the license, lodging or travel. Ask who holds the ceremony permit, whether tax and service are included, and where the ceremony moves in bad weather.

A Lake Tahoe wedding costs an estimated $28,000 to $103,000 across the four lines this guide can price. These are planning figures in US dollars for one wedding day, not venue quotes. They are not tied to one guest count and do not say whether service charge and sales tax are included, so ask.

The $28,000 low end is the four lines at their lowest, with five lines unpriced: a floor for those lines, not for a whole wedding. An earlier single estimate for 100 to 150 guests was $40,000 to $60,000. One resort's own prices show how fast that fills: Edgewood Tahoe's planning guide lists its Willow Ballroom from a $15,000 venue fee with a $30,000 food and beverage minimum, $45,000 before service charge, sales tax and every other vendor. At The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, site fees are estimated to start around $2,500 for the ceremony and $4,000 for the reception, on top of catering (Joy's 2020 venue roundup, not the hotel).

Prices peak on Saturdays in July, August and September; a Friday, a Sunday or a shoulder-season month costs less. The destination wedding budget breakdown shows how to split a total.

The rules for a Lake Tahoe beach wedding depend on who manages that sand: the U.S. Forest Service, California State Parks, Nevada State Parks or a private resort.

• National Forest beaches. In the Lake Tahoe Basin the Forest Service allows fewer than 75 people with no paid planner, officiant, caterer or photographer without a special use permit. Resorts it lists as permitted for weddings include Zephyr Cove Resort and Valhalla Grand Hall; the rest of the Tallac Historic Site is not available. Forests differ: Coconino National Forest, around Sedona, exempts a paid officiant and photographer.
• Sand Harbor. Nevada State Parks permits weddings only in the Group Area, booked on ReserveNevada.com. The booking covers an officiant and a photographer there and reserves no beach. Amplified sound and confetti are banned.
• California state parks. Special events at Emerald Bay require a permit. At Sugar Pine Point, California State Parks books the lakefront ceremony site at the Ehrman Mansion from June 1 to September 16, never on holiday weekends, against a $1,000 non-refundable deposit. Requests for 2027 opened on June 6, 2026, first come, first served.
• Resort beaches. The Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe in Incline Village has a private beach and a lakefront lawn.

A South Lake Tahoe wedding puts you on the livelier, more built-up shore, with the widest range of hotel and casino rooms on the lake, the most restaurants and nightlife, and the Stateline casinos for an after-party.

• Edgewood Tahoe, Stateline, Nevada: a golf course running down to the water, a lakeside ceremony lawn and resort rooms on site.
• Zephyr Cove Resort, Nevada: a shoreline ceremony site with on-site cabins for a smaller group.
• Valhalla Tahoe, Tallac Historic Site: a lakefront ceremony spot and a timber-and-stone Grand Hall.

A North Lake Tahoe wedding is quieter and more forested, spread around Incline Village, Kings Beach, Tahoe City and Truckee, with lodging in resorts and vacation rentals.

• The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, mid-mountain at Northstar near Truckee, California: slope-side terraces with Sierra Nevada views and two ballrooms that seat up to 300.
• Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe, Incline Village, Nevada: a private beach and a lakefront lawn.
• Sugar Bowl Resort, near Donner Summit: a historic lodge with vaulted ceilings, timber and fireplaces.
• Ehrman Mansion, Sugar Pine Point State Park, west shore: a 1903 summer estate with the ceremony at the water's edge. The inside of the mansion is not available for events.

A Tahoe winter wedding falls between December and March, when Tahoe City averages 35 to 46 inches of snowfall a month and daytime highs of 39 to 44°F.

Ski-lodge venues suit it: Sugar Bowl's lodge, or the Ritz-Carlton at Northstar, where the ceremony can be reached by gondola.

Under Caltrans chain controls, drivers must stop and fit chains when signs require them, four-wheel-drive vehicles must still carry traction devices, and the limit drops to 25 or 30 miles an hour. Ask guests to arrive a day early.

Winter is outside the peak summer Saturdays, but it is ski season at the mountain resorts, so ask for winter rates before assuming a saving. See also winter wedding destinations.

The best months for a Lake Tahoe wedding are July, August and September, when Tahoe City averages daytime highs of 78, 77 and 70°F and well under an inch of precipitation a month (long-term averages). Nights are cold all year (an average low of 44°F in July and 39°F in September), so plan heaters or wraps for an outdoor dinner.

For summer scenery without peak prices, mid-September is the pick. The lake sits at 6,225 feet and mountain weather turns fast, so every outdoor plan needs a rain-and-wind backup.

A Lake Tahoe destination wedding is an easy trip for US guests: Reno-Tahoe International Airport is roughly an hour from the lake, Sacramento about two hours by car, and nobody needs a passport.

• Rooms. Tahoe fills on summer and holiday weekends, so reserve a room block on the venue's shore as soon as you have a date.
• Shuttles. Many venues sit on winding two-lane roads with limited parking, so run shuttles from the hotel block, especially after dark.
• Altitude. Tell guests from sea level to drink water, go easy on alcohol the first day and wear sunscreen.
