01 · In a sentence

Inverlochy Castle in Torlundy, open May, July, September, November.

Queen Victoria wrote in her diary in 1873 that she had never seen a lovelier or more romantic spot, and the view from Inverlochy has not changed: Ben Nevis behind, the castle’s own loch in front, gardens and woodland on all sides.

The baronial mansion was built in 1863 by the third Baron Abinger, a couple of miles from the 13th-century ruin it takes its name from, and it has run as a five-star hotel since 1969 with a Relais and Chateaux membership and three AA rosettes for the dining rooms.

Weddings run at two sizes.

The Great Hall, with its frescoed ceiling, Venetian chandeliers and the staircase everyone photographs, takes up to 80 guests, and the drawing room holds 60 for something smaller.

07 · Questions

Asked along the way.

How many guests can Inverlochy Castle hold?+

The Great Hall takes up to 80 guests and the drawing room up to 60. Dinner is served across three dining rooms, so the practical ceiling for a seated wedding here is 80 rather than the hundreds a marquee venue would take.

Can we take the whole castle?+

Yes. Inverlochy offers exclusive use of the hotel, which gives you every room and the grounds with no other guests, or you can hold a smaller celebration in one of the private dining rooms without taking the building.

How many bedrooms are there?+

Published sources differ on the current count after the hotel’s refurbishments, so confirm it with the reservations team when you enquire rather than planning a room list from a third-party listing.

What is the weather like?+

Fort William is one of the wettest places in Britain, averaging over two metres of rain a year. May, June and September are the driest months, and every wedding here needs a plan that works indoors without feeling like a compromise.

How do guests reach Fort William?+

Inverness airport is about an hour and a half by car and Glasgow around two and a half hours. The West Highland Line runs from Glasgow to Fort William in under four hours and is worth taking for the scenery alone.

Is a Scottish ceremony outdoors legal?+

Yes. Scottish law licenses the celebrant rather than the building, so a religious or humanist ceremony can be held anywhere on the grounds, which is why so many couples marry outdoors here when the weather allows.
