Post Ranch Inn opened in 1992 on a ridge 1,200 feet above the Pacific, on land the Post family had ranched since the 1860s. Mickey Muennig designed the 39 rooms to disappear into the hillside: tree houses on stilts, ocean houses under grass roofs, a coast house cut into the slope. Henry Flagler put a hotel on this stretch of Palm Beach sand in 1896. It burned down twice, and the building standing today went up in 1926, modelled on the Villa Medici in Rome and still owned by Flagler’s descendants. There are 538 rooms across 140 oceanfront acres, half a mile of private beach, and the two spaces every Palm Beach wedding is built around: the Ponce de Leon Ballroom, which scales to 500 under hand-painted ceilings and arched windows, and the Ocean Lawn, which takes ceremonies and dinners from 100 to 500 people directly above the Atlantic.
