Cliveden House and its parterre gardens above the River Thames in Berkshire

Cliveden House

Taplow · Hotel

Cliveden stands on a bank 40 metres above the Thames in 376 acres of National Trust parkland, half an hour from Heathrow and an hour from central London. Charles Barry built the present Italianate mansion in 1851; the Astors ran it as the most political address in England for most of the last century, and the Profumo affair started at its swimming pool. It is now a 47-bedroom Grade I listed hotel that takes one wedding at a time on exclusive use. The published shape is clean: up to 130 guests for the ceremony, drinks and wedding breakfast, up to 180 for the evening party, all year round, and from 121 to 230 seated if you add a marquee on the lawns. The Great Hall, with its tapestries and stone fireplace, holds 150. Ceremonies run indoors or on the Parterre, the formal garden that drops in terraces towards the river, and the estate keeps its own Thames launches for the photographs. Exclusive use is quoted rather than published, and there is a minimum spend, so start that conversation early for a Saturday in summer.

Estelle Manor, the Jacobean-revival hall at Eynsham Park in Oxfordshire

Estelle Manor

Eynsham Park · Hotel

Estelle Manor opened in 2023 in Eynsham Hall, a Grade II listed Jacobean-revival pile rebuilt by Ernest George at the turn of the last century, and it is now the most talked-about country address within ninety minutes of London. There are 108 bedrooms, four restaurants, 85 acres of gardens inside a 3,000-acre estate, and Eynsham Baths, a 3,000 square metre Roman-inspired spa that is the reason half the guest list will arrive early. Weddings use the Orangery, the Library, the Glass House, the Chestnuts and Fallow House, the events building added since opening, and the estate is licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 200 guests. It took the Eve Jobs and Harry Charles reception, with the ceremony held at the church on the neighbouring Great Tew estate, which is a fair picture of how a full-estate buyout here runs. Like Soho Farmhouse up the road it is a members’ club with a hotel attached, so wedding enquiries are taken case by case and there is no published tariff.

Chewton Glen’s country house frontage and lawns on the edge of the New Forest

Chewton Glen

New Milton · Hotel

Chewton Glen sits in 130 acres on the southern edge of the New Forest, a mile from the sea at Barton on Sea and about twenty-five minutes from Bournemouth airport. It is a country house hotel of the old English kind, which means tennis courts, a spa, a kitchen garden and a cookery school rather than a ballroom, and it has spent fifty years being the place couples in the south of England book when they want the whole thing handled. There are 58 rooms in the main hotel and twelve treehouse suites on stilts in a wooded valley behind it, reached by walkways, which are the reason half the guests will want to stay two nights. Weddings run to 140 for the wedding banquet and 200 for the evening reception, with exclusive use available against a minimum spend. At the other end, the hotel sells the small versions properly: the Marryat Suite takes up to 20, and a Treehouse ceremony takes eight, which is a real option rather than a consolation prize. Exclusive-use pricing is quoted on request, and service and VAT sit on top.

Timber cabins and converted barns across the Soho Farmhouse estate at Great Tew

Soho Farmhouse

Great Tew · Estate

Soho House’s Oxfordshire farm sits on 100 acres at Great Tew: timber cabins along a stream, a lake, a boathouse, and a cluster of working farm buildings converted into rooms that hold a party. Ceremonies happen in the Jackson Barn or in the 11th-century village church at Great Tew, a mile up the lane. Dinner runs in the Main Barn, which seats 330, or the Hay Barn, which takes 500 standing, so a 200-guest wedding fits here without anyone hiring a marquee. Smaller counts use the Barwell Barn at 200, the Mill Room at 150 or the Cowshed at 65. The morning after is the point of the place: the Cowshed spa, tennis courts, the lake, Pen Yen and the Farm Shop, with guests staying in the cabins rather than driving back to a hotel. Two things to know before you enquire. This is a private members’ club, so a wedding is arranged through membership rather than a public diary, and cabins are for members and their guests. Planners also report that wedding dates are normally offered on Thursdays, with the rest of the week kept for members. Nothing about the wedding tariff is published, and enquiries are taken case by case.
