The site is well-positioned, historically already known for its strategic position in the middle Tiber Valley between Perugia, Todi, and Orvieto, overlooking the axis of the Nestore and Puglia rivers, both flowing into the Tiber from the west and east. The Nestore, with its sources west of Mount Arale at Monteleone d'Orvieto, not far from Città della Pieve, guards the terminal part of the Val di Chiana and Chiusi; and the Puglia, with its sources north of Mount Martano at Giano dell'Umbria, not far from Spoleto, where the eastern Umbrian Valley begins, crossed by the Teverone and Clitunno rivers, which flow into the Topino and Chiascio, all tributaries of the Tiber. Here, after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Byzantine Corridor from Rome to Ravenna was built, to defend the Lombards of Spoleto to the east and the Tuscia of Chiusi to the west.
