How to plan a Cancún wedding.

A Cancún wedding at an all-inclusive resort is estimated at $13,000 to $19,000 in direct costs to the couple. That estimate is for a mid-range resort and includes professional photography, upgraded flowers, a private plated dinner and a DJ or live music. The resort package on its own is estimated at $6,500 to $8,500 for 30 to 60 guests.

These are planning estimates in US dollars, not quotes. The package, elopement and guest-trip rows come from Joy's 2026 cost article; the other two rows are this guide's own, and the fully upgraded estimate states no guest count. None says whether Mexican tax and service charges are included, so ask each resort for an all-in price.

Many resorts set a minimum number of paid room nights before they waive or discount the venue fee, so your room block feeds into your own bill. Guests pay for their own trip; the guest travel estimator prices flights and rooms by departure city.

Cancún weddings are sold as resort packages that bundle the ceremony, a dinner, flowers and a cake, with an on-site coordinator to run the day.

• Base package. A legal or symbolic ceremony, the officiant, and a small bouquet and boutonniere.
• Mid-tier package. An upgraded ceremony setup, a private reception dinner, flower arrangements, a cake and the coordinator's time.
• Upgrades. Professional photography, better flowers, a private plated dinner, and a DJ or live music.

Some resorts waive the package price for a long enough stay: Hyatt Ziva Cancun has a complimentary package for couples staying seven nights or more, so ask for its current conditions. Before comparing prices, ask each resort for its room-night minimum, its outside vendor policy, how many weddings it hosts per day, whether the reception space is private, and what triggers an upgrade from the base package. There are two ways of getting married in Cancún. A legal civil ceremony is performed by an official of the civil registry (the oficial del Registro Civil) and ends with a Mexican marriage certificate, the acta de matrimonio. A symbolic ceremony has no legal effect: you marry at a courthouse at home before or after the trip, and nothing is filed in Mexico. It usually costs less, and the day itself is the same.

Only a civil ceremony is legally valid in Mexico, as the US Embassy there states; a religious ceremony alone is not. Cancún is in the municipality of Benito Juárez, whose civil registry has nine offices, one of them in the Hotel Zone at Km 12.5. The official can marry you at an office or at your resort; the municipality's listed fees (October 2026) differ.

Translations, apostilles and any resort coordination fee are extra. The ceremony takes about 20 to 30 minutes and is conducted in Spanish; resorts usually arrange an English-speaking interpreter.

These fees and the checklist below are Benito Juárez's. Each municipality runs its own civil registry: Costa Mujeres and Isla Mujeres belong to the municipality of Isla Mujeres, and resorts toward the Riviera Maya may fall in another, so ask which office handles yours.

The Benito Juárez registry publishes its checklist for two foreign nationals in the municipal register of procedures. It asks for:

• Passports. Valid, for each of you.
• Birth certificates. Apostilled or legalized, and translated into Spanish by a translator authorized by Quintana Roo's Superior Court of Justice. Without one, the list says, your details are taken from the passport alone.
• Four witnesses. Two adults for each of you, with valid photo ID; a passport if they are foreign. Elopements need them too; ask the resort who can stand in.
• Sworn statements from each of you that you are not married, and the application, both on the registry's forms.
• Certificates from the civil registry that neither of you is on Quintana Roo's register of maintenance debtors (unpaid family support).
• A divorce or death certificate if either of you was married before.

Proof of legal stay is listed as optional, but the US Embassy says US citizens marrying in Mexico must present their tourist cards, so keep your entry record from immigration.

Medical tests are the open question. A Civil Code reform published on July 23, 2026 repealed the medical certificate that Article 682 used to require. The registry's checklist still lists prenuptial blood tests (HIV, VDRL and Rh) with a doctor's certificate, valid for 30 days and on the wedding day, and its procedure notes give them 15 calendar days. Ask the registry which applies to your date.

The procedure: hand in the documents and book the date; return a week before with the complete file and pay the fee; arrive 15 minutes early on the day to check the draft certificate. You leave with the certificate and a certified copy. Do not book flights until the registry or your coordinator has said who must appear in person, and when.

Before you leave, have the certificate apostilled by the Quintana Roo Secretaría de Gobierno, which has an apostille office in central Cancún, open 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Riviera Maya guide covers the Mexico-wide questions, including how the marriage is recognized at home.

The dry season, from late November through April, is the best time for a wedding in Cancún: 24 to 30 degrees Celsius, moderate humidity and little rain. Within it, late February through mid-March has clean beaches and good light.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, according to the US National Hurricane Center, so September is the month to avoid. June and early July bring thinner crowds and lower resort prices if you have a real indoor backup; early November and late April give similar value with less risk.

Sargassum, the brown seaweed that washes onto Caribbean beaches, is typically minimal from November through March and can start arriving in April; December and January have historically been the cleanest. The timing shifts: in 2026 it arrived early, with beaching recorded in January and significant arrivals by mid-March. Check live beach conditions before you fix a date.

The resort is your venue, caterer, planner and hotel at once. The Hotel Zone, a strip of sand between the Caribbean and the Nichupté Lagoon, runs along 22 kilometers of beach lined with all-inclusive resorts that host weddings. Four to know:

• Hyatt Ziva Cancun sits at the northern tip of the Hotel Zone with ocean on three sides, and has an open-air rooftop terrace above the water. It is all-inclusive and family-friendly.
• Nizuc Resort and Spa, on Punta Nizuc, is the luxury choice. It has ramps, adapted rooms and beach wheelchairs; confirm what a guest needs before you book.
• Secrets resorts are adults-only, for a weekend without children.
• Dreams resorts are the family counterpart, with kids' clubs and larger family suites.

Costa Mujeres, about 20 minutes from the Hotel Zone, and Isla Mujeres, a 20-minute ferry ride from the city, are quieter places sold alongside Cancún. Book the resort and date 10 to 14 months ahead for a peak-season wedding; December and January go first, often a year or more ahead at the best resorts. Send save-the-dates as soon as the date is set, eight to twelve months out. Cancún International Airport has nonstop flights from many US and Canadian cities. Decide legal or symbolic first, because it sets the paperwork and your arrival date.

For the weekend, hold a welcome event the evening before the wedding, and offer a catamaran sail, the Chichén Itzá ruins or a cenote swim on a spare day. Put the ceremony in late afternoon, when the light is best; a beach ceremony at noon in July is punishing for guests. Suggest travel insurance to guests, since hurricane season overlaps much of the calendar.
