Where it fits

Tropical formal is what a formal wedding becomes in real heat and humidity. The formality is intact; the fabrics change. Linen, cotton and chiffon in place of wool and satin, and colour in place of black.

It is the standard code for weddings in the Caribbean, Hawaii, Mexico and Southeast Asia, and it usually covers an outdoor ceremony followed by dinner that runs late into a warm evening.

What to wear

For her

Lightweight maxi dresses in vibrant colors or tropical prints hit the mark, and breathable fabrics like chiffon or linen blend keep you comfortable in the heat. Sandals or wedges are ideal, especially if the celebration is near sand or grass.

For him

Linen suits or dress pants with a linen shirt keep things elegant while staying cool, and the jacket is often optional in warmer climates. Boat shoes, loafers, or dressy sandals round out the look nicely.

What to skip

A dark wool suit; you will spend the night regretting it. Heavy synthetics, which do not breathe. Black head to toe, which reads as out of place against that light. And anything strapless you will spend the evening adjusting in the wind.

How to say it

On a printed invitation the dress code is just the term, set in the lower corner. The explanation belongs on your wedding site, where there is room to mention the grass and the evening chill.

On the invitation

Tropical formal

On your wedding website

Tropical formal. Long dresses in bright colours or prints, linen suits, and fabrics that breathe. Jackets are optional and most men leave them at the hotel. It stays warm after dark, so pack for heat rather than for the evening.

Want it in your own words? The dress-code tool writes both lines for a warm or formal tone and for a garden, beach, or estate setting.

Tropical Formal: questions people ask

What does tropical formal mean?

Formal wedding dressing in hot-weather fabrics. Women wear a lightweight maxi or midi, often in a bright colour or a print. Men wear a linen suit, or linen trousers with a linen shirt, with the jacket usually optional.

Can men wear a linen shirt without a jacket?

At most tropical formal weddings, yes. The heat makes jackets impractical and couples know it. If you want to be safe, bring the jacket and read the room during the ceremony; it will be obvious within ten minutes.

What colours work for a tropical formal wedding?

Bright and saturated. Coral, turquoise, citrus, and large florals all belong here and photograph well against that light. Black is not forbidden but it absorbs heat and tends to look heavy in a tropical setting.

Is tropical formal the same as beach formal?

Close, and often used interchangeably. Beach formal is about the terrain, so it emphasises shoes and wind. Tropical formal is about the heat, so it emphasises fabric and colour. If a wedding is both, dress for the sand and pick light fabrics.
