Malibu Beach Inn in Malibu, open JuneSeptember.

Malibu Beach Inn is an oceanfront resort on the Malibu coast, where the sea sits directly beyond the balconies and fireplaces of its guest rooms.

Eight room and suite categories are available, from the King Pier Room to the Premier Room, 1 King Bed, Balcony, Oceanfront (Fireplace), each accommodating up to four guests, so couples can house family and close friends on site.

A meeting and banquet space handles the ceremony reception side of the weekend, suiting the modern, elegant tone we would expect here.

The resort sits around 50 minutes from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) by our estimate, making arrivals straightforward for travelling guests.

I had really high expectations for Malibu Beach Inn given its reputation, and unfortunately, my experience fell well below what I expected from a luxury hotel. Before my stay, I contacted the hotel to let them know I'd be arriving early and asked whether an early check-in might be possible if my room happened to be ready. I completely understood that it wasn't guaranteed, and they kindly said they would do their best. I also mentioned that I was celebrating my boyfriend's birthday, and they graciously offered a complimentary birthday tart with a candle, which I thought was a wonderful gesture. When I arrived around 2 PM, I was told my room would be ready "when it's ready," with no estimated timeframe. Again, I understood that early check-in isn't guaranteed, so that wasn't the issue. What was disappointing was what happened immediately afterward. Another guest arrived shortly after me and was told by a different front desk employee that because she had arrived early, her room would be ready in about 20-30 minutes, and she was personally escorted to the restaurant to relax while waiting. Meanwhile, when I asked if there was somewhere I could comfortably wait or if they could give me even a rough estimate of when to return, I was simply told that they would text me when the room was ready and that there were "plenty of places to sit and rest," without any guidance. I tried accessing the beach but quickly realized that access requires a room key. When I returned to the front desk to ask if they could let us onto the beach while we waited, the employee initially insisted that I already had access. I had to explain that I couldn't possibly have access because I hadn't been given a room key yet. The interaction felt dismissive and unnecessarily rude. As a young Asian guest, the difference in how I was treated compared to another guest left me feeling uncomfortable and wondering whether I was being treated differently. I can't say for certain why our experiences were so different, but it certainly didn't feel welcoming. To make matters worse, my room wasn't ready until exactly 4:00 PM—the standard check-in time—so it clearly wasn't available early despite the earlier conversation. When I entered the room, none of the promised welcome amenities were there. The birthday tart, welcome items, and special touches that had been discussed before my arrival were all missing. At check-in, we had also used valet parking and were told that our luggage would be delivered to our room. It never arrived, and we eventually had to call the front desk to have our bags brought up. After returning from dinner around 6 PM, someone finally delivered the welcome amenities, but even then, they had still forgotten the birthday surprise that had been arranged weeks before my stay. The location is absolutely beautiful, and the property itself is stunning. Unfortunately, the level of hospitality didn't match the price or the reputation. Luxury hotels are defined by thoughtful, attentive service and consistency, and this stay missed the mark in several important ways. I left feeling more frustrated than cared for, which is disappointing for what was supposed to be a special birthday celebration. If you're a person of color, I would think twice before booking this place.
