Hotel Marqués de Riscal, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Elciego in Elciego, open April, June – August.
Frank Gehry’s titanium ribbons over a working winery founded in 1858, in the medieval village of Elciego, an hour south of Bilbao in the Rioja Alavesa.
It was Gehry’s second building in Spain after the Guggenheim and it does the same trick: a shape you have seen in photographs a hundred times, standing in vineyards, with the village church behind it.
There are 61 rooms and suites split between the Gehry building and the spa wing.
Weddings use the banquet rooms that look over the vineyards, the winery’s own cellars, and the terraces under the ribbons; the hotel puts events at up to 400 guests, and its spaces are described as adapting to 650 for a reception.

Asked along the way.
How many guests can the hotel host?+
The hotel describes hosting up to 400 guests across its spaces, and a second published figure puts the rooms as adaptable to 650 for a reception or conference. Individual wedding packages are quoted for smaller groups, typically 60 to 140.
Can we get married at the winery itself?+
Ceremonies, civil and religious, are held at the hotel, and the winery’s cellars and terraces are used for drinks, tours and dinner. The estate is a working bodega, so vineyard and cellar access is arranged around production.
Where do guests stay?+
The hotel has 61 rooms and suites, which covers a medium-sized wedding. Larger guest lists spill into Laguardia, ten minutes away, and Logroño, about twenty minutes, both of which have hotels and their own reasons to spend an evening in.
What is there to do besides the wedding?+
Cellar tours reaching bottles laid down in the 1860s, a Michelin-starred restaurant in the hotel, a Caudalie vinothérapie spa, and the walled town of Laguardia ten minutes north. Rioja Alavesa is dense with bodegas, several of them architecturally notable.
When should we come?+
May, June and September. Harvest runs from late September into October and the estate gets busy with it, which is atmospheric but crowds the calendar. Winters in the Ebro valley are cold and the vineyards are bare.
