Almar Giardino di Costanza Mazara del Vallo Resort & Spa is a restored coastal resort on Sicily's sea-facing southwest, with 88 suite-style rooms and both indoor and outdoor space for celebrations.
The venue holds up to 400 guests for a seated dinner and up to 600 standing, with in-house catering and a meeting and banquet space that can be arranged for ceremonies, receptions and next-day gatherings.
Accommodation runs from Junior Suites for two to a Family Suite sleeping five, plus connecting suite configurations for larger parties, and a full buyout is available for couples who want the resort to themselves.
The nearest airport is Palermo (PMO), which we estimate at around 35 minutes by transfer.
A lovely, charming resort with genuine five-star ambition, though in a few places you can tell the property has aged a little. The rooms are the clear highlight: very spacious, a big bed, a large bathroom – you could almost go for a walk to get our daughter to sleep. The service is excellent throughout, everyone wonderfully friendly and attentive. The pool is nice and quite large, though the parasols could be bigger – with a baby it got cramped underneath. €6 for a bottle of water is steep, but that’s five-star territory for you. Breakfast is top notch: about half of it sweet (typically Italian), but enough savoury options, and the espresso good to very good. The scrambled eggs from the buffet are a winner – the egg dishes you can order on the side, however, aren’t worth the money (canned avocado cream, and the sauce for the eggs Benedict didn’t taste especially fresh). Opinions diverged on dinner: my wife enjoyed AquaMadre, while I found it bland and overpriced. The clear recommendation is the pool bar – the food there was excellent (the Pinsa Lampedusa fantastic, though at €22 hardly a bargain), and at 5:30 pm it was perfect for an early bedtime with the baby. The compact gym is well equipped, if not with the very latest machines. We knew in advance that the resort sits “off the track” – a rental car is essential here, but that was no problem for us. Bottom line: five-star level that’s justifiable at around €280 a night – though given the slightly worn state of the property, I wouldn’t call it outstanding value.
