01 · In a sentence

Abbaye de la Bussière in La Bussière-sur-Ouche, open June – September.

A 12th-century Cistercian abbey in the Ouche valley, half an hour from both Dijon and Beaune, working as a hotel with twenty rooms and suites.

The wine cellar is the reason serious Burgundy people stay here, and the setting is the reason couples do: cloister stone, a lake, and a consecrated crypt underneath the building where an intimate ceremony can happen.

Numbers are modest and clearly stated.

The salons hold 50 seated and 60 for a cocktail; the park takes 100 seated and 200 standing in high season.

07 · Questions

Asked along the way.

How many guests can Abbaye de la Bussière host?+

The salons seat 50 and hold 60 for a cocktail. In high season the park takes 100 seated and 200 for a standing reception. Outside the summer months the indoor numbers are the ceiling, so the season shapes the guest list here.

Where does the ceremony happen?+

Couples use the consecrated crypt below the abbey for an intimate ceremony, or the park in summer. The legal marriage still takes place at a mairie, as it does everywhere in France, so the abbey ceremony is religious or symbolic.

Can wedding guests stay at the abbey?+

Twenty rooms and suites sleep roughly 40 people on site. Everyone else stays in Beaune, half an hour away, which has the widest choice in the Côte d’Or, or in Dijon, a similar distance in the other direction.

What does a wedding here cost?+

The abbey quotes by proposal and publishes no rate card. Burgundy prices below Provence and the Riviera, and a full take of twenty rooms is the main line in the budget. Everything on this page is estimated rather than quoted.

What can guests do in Burgundy over the weekend?+

Nuits-Saint-Georges is twenty minutes away and the Route des Grands Crus runs from there down to Beaune, with the Hospices and its Saturday market at the end. Book domaine tastings well ahead; the good ones are small and fill early.
