01 · In a sentence

Troutbeck in Amenia, open June – July, September – October.

Troutbeck is a 250-acre estate in the Harlem Valley, two hours north of Manhattan, and it has a longer history than most American wedding venues.

The Spingarn family lived here, and in 1916 and 1917 they hosted the early conferences that shaped the NAACP; W. E. B. Du Bois wrote here.

The present manor dates from 1918, and the estate reopened as a hotel in 2017 with 37 rooms and suites across the manor, the garden house and the barn, sleeping more than 80 people.

Weddings are full buyouts and nothing else: exclusive use of the property from noon on Saturday to noon on Sunday, with a required two-night room buyout underneath it, for up to 200 guests.

07 · Questions

Asked along the way.

How many guests can Troutbeck host?+

Up to 200 for a wedding. The estate sleeps more than 80 across its 37 rooms and suites, so a guest list above that puts the overflow in inns and rentals around Amenia, Millerton and Sharon just over the Connecticut line.

What does a wedding at Troutbeck cost?+

In high season, May to November, the published structure is a $50,000 estate fee plus a food and drink minimum of $130,000 for up to 200 guests, so $180,000 before the required two-night room buyout, state tax and the administrative fee.

Is a buyout required?+

Yes. Every wedding here is structured as a full buyout with exclusive use of the property from noon on Saturday to noon on Sunday, and a two-night minimum on the rooms. There is no version of this that shares the estate.

How do guests get to Amenia?+

Most drive, about two hours from Manhattan. Metro-North runs to Wassaic, ten minutes from the estate, which is how a good share of guests arrive. Westchester County Airport is a little over an hour away and JFK about two.

What is there to do around the estate?+

The 250 acres carry a river walk, a walled garden, fire pits and swimming. Beyond the gate there is the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, the Millbrook wineries, and Sharon and Salisbury in Connecticut, all within half an hour.

When is the best time of year to marry here?+

High season runs May to November, and the peak of it is late September and October when the valley turns. Winter weddings happen at a lower estate fee, indoors, with fires lit, and the property is arguably better in the cold.
