Odakyu Hotel de Yama in Hakone, open December – January, July, September.

Hotel de Yama sits on the eastern shore of Lake Ashi at Motohakone, on grounds of about 130,000 square metres that were laid out as a private estate and are still best known for the rhododendron and azalea garden that flowers in May.

It has been here more than sixty years and was rebuilt in 2015.

Every guest room looks at the lake, and on a clear morning Mount Fuji stands over the far end of it, which is the photograph people come to Hakone for.

Weddings are held in a garden chapel on the grounds, with receptions in the banquet halls or in one of the two restaurants, the French Vert Bois or the Japanese Tsutsuji no Chaya.

07 · Questions

Asked along the way.

How many guests can Hotel de Yama hold?+

The hotel does not publish a wedding capacity. It runs banquet halls alongside two restaurants used for wedding parties, so a reception of around 100 to 120 is a fair planning assumption to take to the hotel for confirmation.

Can we see Mount Fuji from the venue?+

On a clear day, yes. The hotel looks west down Lake Ashi with Fuji beyond the far shore, and every guest room faces the water. Winter mornings give the highest odds; summer haze frequently hides the mountain entirely.

When is the garden at its best?+

May, when the rhododendrons and azaleas that the estate is known for come out across the 130,000 square metres of grounds. Autumn colour follows in November, and the lake and the mountains carry the rest of the year.

How do guests reach Hakone?+

The Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto takes about 85 minutes, then it is a bus or car up to Motohakone. By road from Haneda it is roughly two hours. Most guests come by train and take the hotel shuttle or a taxi at the end.

Is the weather a risk?+

Yes. Hakone is a mountain caldera and it clouds and rains at short notice in every season, so a garden ceremony needs a written indoor alternative in the same building rather than a plan to move the party elsewhere.
