01 · In a sentence

Lowndes Grove in Charleston, open February, April, June, October.

Lowndes Grove is fourteen acres on the Ashley River and the last river estate left inside the Charleston peninsula.

Its main house dates from 1786 and the grounds run down to a private dock 700 feet long, which is why every photograph from here has water in it and why the sunsets do the work no lighting plan can.

Ceremonies happen on the grand lawn facing the river; drinks and dinner spread across the piazzas and the terraces, and the River House on the same grounds takes up to 100 on its own.

The property is run by Patrick Properties Hospitality Group, whose kitchen caters every event here, so the food is settled when the venue is.

07 · Questions

Asked along the way.

How many guests can Lowndes Grove hold?+

The published ceiling is 500, but the grounds work best at 225 or fewer and that is the number most planners here design against. The River House on the same estate takes up to 100 for a smaller wedding or a rehearsal dinner.

What does the site rental include?+

Exclusive use of the estate house and grounds for a four-hour event, with flexible vendor arrival and setup beforehand and two hours of breakdown afterwards. Rental generally runs from $3,000 to $14,000 and up depending on the season and the day.

Can we bring our own caterer?+

No. Patrick Properties Hospitality Group runs the estate and its own kitchen caters every event, with menus and drinks packages built after you book. Other vendors, from florists to bands, are yours to choose.

Where do guests stay?+

There is no accommodation on the estate. Guests stay in downtown Charleston, ten minutes away by car, where the hotels on Meeting and King Street hold blocks well. Book early for spring and autumn, which are the city’s busy seasons.

When is the best time of year to marry in Charleston?+

March to May and late September to November. Summer is hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, and the Atlantic hurricane season peaks in September, which is worth a line in your insurance rather than a change of date.

What is the history of the property?+

Lowndes Grove was built in 1786 and the estate was worked by enslaved people, as most river properties around Charleston were. It was long marketed under a name that included the word plantation; the current owners removed it. Ask the venue directly if you want the fuller history.
