HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO in Nakagyo, open July – September, December.
This is the old Kyoto estate of the Kita branch of the Mitsui family, held by them for more than 250 years and opened as a hotel in 2020, directly opposite the Nijo Castle gate.
The plan is built around a strolling garden with a pond, a weeping willow and stepping stones, and the guest wings wrap it, so almost every route through the building crosses water.
Two things set it apart for a wedding.
The first is Shiki-no-Ma, a ceremonial room standing in the garden itself, used for private dining, tea and ceremonies, which gives you a Japanese room with a garden on three sides rather than a ballroom with a garden view.

Asked along the way.
How many guests can HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO hold?+
The hotel does not publish a wedding capacity. Shiki-no-Ma is a small ceremonial room and the hotel’s event spaces are modest by Kyoto hotel standards, so plan for a guest list in the tens and confirm the exact room with the events team.
What is Shiki-no-Ma?+
A ceremonial room that stands within the hotel’s garden, used for private dining, tea gatherings and ceremonies. It is the reason to hold a wedding here rather than at a larger Kyoto hotel, because the garden surrounds the room instead of sitting outside a window.
How close is Nijo Castle?+
It is directly across the road. The hotel occupies the site of the Mitsui family estate opposite the castle gate, so the UNESCO-listed grounds are a two-minute walk and photographs there need no transport at all.
What does a wedding cost here?+
The hotel publishes no wedding pricing. Kyoto hotels at this tier commonly run 30,000 to 50,000 yen a head for banquet food and drink before ceremony, flowers and attire, and the hotel quotes the whole package on enquiry.
Is there an onsen for guests?+
Yes, and it is unusual for central Kyoto. The hotel draws a thermal spring from beneath the property for its spa, which gives a wedding party somewhere to be on the afternoon between arriving and the welcome dinner.
