Cowdray House in Midhurst, open May – August.
Cowdray is 16,000 acres of the South Downs National Park, an hour from Gatwick, with the Tudor ruins of the old Tudor mansion standing in the park as a reminder of the fire that took it in 1793.
The Pearson family built the present Cowdray House and lived in it until recently; it now goes out for exclusive use, one party at a time, with 22 double en-suite bedrooms sleeping 44.
Buck Hall, under its vaulted ceiling, seats 150 for dinner and takes 300 for a standing reception, and a marquee on the lawns handles up to 600.
The estate is the reason to come rather than the building alone: 110 acres of Capability Brown gardens, a lake, indoor and outdoor pools, a bowling alley, a billiards room, tennis, and the polo grounds at Cowdray Park, which is where the sport has been played in England since 1910.

Asked along the way.
How many guests can Cowdray House hold?+
Buck Hall seats up to 150 for dinner and holds 300 for a standing reception. A marquee on the lawns takes as many as 600, which is the route larger weddings use while keeping the main rooms for the ceremony and drinks.
What does exclusive use include?+
The main house and gardens, the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the bowling alley, tennis courts, croquet lawn and 22 double en-suite bedrooms sleeping 44, with only your party on the property.
Is this the Tudor ruin?+
No. The Grade I listed Cowdray ruins stand separately in the park, destroyed by fire in 1793 and now a visitor attraction. The wedding venue is the later Cowdray House across the park, which is the family home the estate lets.
What does a wedding at Cowdray cost?+
Cowdray designs each wedding rather than selling packages, so pricing is quoted after a conversation about dates, guest numbers and how many nights you take. Our cost panel is an estimate for the tier, not a quote.
What can guests do on the estate?+
Polo at Cowdray Park, which has hosted the sport since 1910, plus golf, clay pigeon shooting, fly fishing and walking straight onto the South Downs Way. Midhurst, with its pubs and the Spread Eagle, is a mile away.
How do guests get there?+
Gatwick is about an hour by car and Heathrow an hour and a quarter. Haslemere station is twenty minutes away with direct trains from London Waterloo in under an hour, which makes this an easy weekend for London guests.
