How to plan a Phuket wedding.

A Phuket wedding at a luxury private villa or resort is estimated at USD 28,000 to USD 110,000 all in. The range is three planning budgets, not quotes, which the wedding venue site Brides Venues published in June 2026. Its breakdown has no line for guests' flights or hotel rooms and no word on whether service charge and VAT are included.

The lines are not a full budget: for 80 guests, the lowest venue, catering, photography and flowers estimates total about USD 18,000 before a planner's fee, against that band's USD 50,000 floor. Ask every venue whether its catering quote is nett or plus-plus, meaning before a 10 percent service charge and then 7 percent VAT on the new total, about 17.7 percent in all. A USD 10,000 plus-plus quote becomes USD 11,770.

Phuket is about 50 kilometres long and slow to cross in high-season traffic, so pick the coast first. The west (Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao, Patong, Kata) has the sunset beaches and most of the big resorts. The east (Cape Panwa, Ao Yon) faces the mainland, with calmer water and more privacy. The north (Layan, Mai Khao) has the quietest sand and the newest luxury properties.

A resort runs the logistics, has staff on site, can move you indoors if it rains, and often folds the space into a minimum spend. A private villa keeps rooms, ceremony, dinner and after-party in one place for 40 to 80 guests, but you are building a venue: generator, catering kitchen, staff, rentals and sound. The dry season runs from November to April, under the northeast monsoon; the wet season, from May to October.

In any month, agree a wet-weather plan you would be glad to use: a covered sala pavilion or a ballroom.

A marriage is legal in Thailand only once it is registered at a district office, called an amphur. Two foreigners can register in Phuket without being residents. Both must be at least 18, and anyone under 20 needs written permission from their parents. Same-sex couples have been able to register since 23 January 2025. Recognition at home depends on your own country's law.

1. Get proof that you are free to marry from your own embassy or consulate in Thailand, often called an affidavit of freedom to marry. Each foreign partner needs one. If you were married before, bring the original divorce or death certificate.
2. Have it translated into Thai by a professional translation service, with the company's stamp and signature.
3. Have both legalised by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its Department of Consular Affairs is on Chaeng Watthana Road in Bangkok and lists a legalisation office in Phuket too, on Floor B of Central Phuket Festival. Book online. Standard service takes a few days; expedited service costs more.
4. Register at an amphur in Phuket with your passports, the legalised papers, two witnesses and proof that any earlier marriage has ended. The registrar conducts the marriage and gives you two identical certificates in Thai. Ask the office first what it wants, including whether divorce papers need a legalised Thai translation: some ask for a certified passport copy, and you may need an appointment.

Have the certificate translated into English for use at home; if your home authority wants it certified, the same Ministry legalises it. Thai law also makes a woman whose husband has died, or whose marriage has otherwise ended, wait 310 days before marrying a man, with exceptions such as a medical certificate that she is not pregnant. Step one, by passport:

The US Embassy calls registration a process that can take several days. In peak periods British nationals can wait up to 3 weeks for an embassy slot. Do not start too early: an Australian CNI is accepted for 3 months after issue, and most district offices accept a British affirmation dated up to 3 months before the marriage. The Ministry's offices open on weekdays only, so book the embassy slot before the flights and leave spare working days.

A beach ceremony or a monks' blessing is symbolic unless a registrar takes part. UK government guidance says religious ceremonies are not valid on their own, and that the registrar can marry you at your chosen venue for a fee. The other common route is to register at home and keep the Phuket day symbolic, which removes the embassy and Ministry steps.

Two Thai rituals suit a symbolic day: a Buddhist blessing, in which monks chant early in the morning and the couple receive a sai sin thread around the wrist, and Rod Nam Sang, in which guests pour blessed water over the couple's hands from a conch shell.

For an elopement, the planner Unique Phuket publishes ceremony-only starting prices: from THB 70,000 for a beach elopement or a Buddhist blessing, and from about THB 80,000 for a beach ceremony with guests.

Phuket International Airport has direct flights from across Asia and the Gulf, including Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Dubai, Doha and Sydney. From North America and most of Europe, guests connect through Bangkok, Singapore, Doha or Dubai; from the US east coast, allow around 24 hours door to door.

UK travel advice says that since 15 September 2026 British passport holders entering under the visa exemption can stay up to 30 days, for tourism only. All foreign nationals must complete Thailand's digital arrival card online within the 3 days before they arrive. Guests on other passports should check their own government's advice.

The airport is in the north: about 20 minutes to Mai Khao or Layan, 45 minutes to Kamala, and an hour or more to Cape Panwa or Kata in traffic. Send save-the-dates 10 to 12 months ahead; our invitations guide covers when invitations follow. Block rooms across at least two price tiers.

Hire a planner based on Phuket, not one who flies in: someone who already knows which villa has a noise curfew, which beach loses its sand in April and which caterer can deliver 90 covers. Ask for recent full weddings at your venue or one like it, a sample budget in the currency you will pay in, what the fee leaves out, and whether they take commission from vendors. Phuket weddings are timed around sunset, which falls between roughly 6:00 and 6:50pm all year. Keemala, a Phuket resort, advises starting the ceremony 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. Even in the dry season, a 2pm outdoor ceremony is uncomfortable in formal clothes, so provide fans, water and shade. Many residential villa areas cut amplified music around midnight or earlier.
