How do you get married in a castle in Ireland?

Getting married in an Irish castle takes five steps: hold a date, choose a solemniser from the Register of Solemnisers, give a registrar at least three months' notice, collect your Marriage Registration Form, and marry at the castle before two witnesses. Ireland has no residency requirement, so foreign couples follow the same steps.

1. Hold a date. Compare castle wedding venues in Ireland, and leave three clear months for the notice.
2. Choose a solemniser. This decides which days and which parts of the castle you can use.
3. Give notice. Both of you notify a registrar and pay the €200 fee.
4. Collect the Marriage Registration Form. Without it, the ceremony is not legal.
5. Marry and register. You, both witnesses and the solemniser sign the form after the ceremony. After a religious or secular ceremony, return it to a registrar within one month.

To get married in Ireland, both partners must give a registrar at a Civil Registration Service at least three months' notice, pay a non-refundable €200 notification fee, and sign a declaration that there is no impediment to the marriage. The registrar then issues a Marriage Registration Form, which works like a marriage licence.

The notice applies to civil, religious and secular ceremonies, and only a court exemption order can shorten it.

Americans can legally get married in Ireland, and a US citizen does not have to live there first. A couple living in the United States can ask a registrar for permission to give the three months' notice by post, but both must then meet the registrar in person at least five days before the ceremony to sign the declaration.

Americans add four things to the standard list:

• An interview. When one of you is a foreign national, you attend an interview with the registrar.
• Immigration status. If either of you is not an EU citizen, bring up-to-date evidence of your immigration status.

To check that your state recognises a marriage made abroad, the US State Department says to contact the attorney general's office where you live. Dublin and Shannon airports both have US preclearance, so guests clear US customs before boarding the flight home.

A wedding at an Irish castle is legal only when a solemniser on the Register of Solemnisers performs it: a civil registrar, a religious solemniser, or a secular solemniser such as a Humanist Association of Ireland celebrant. Civil registrars marry couples Monday to Friday only, so a legal Saturday ceremony needs a religious or secular solemniser.

The total leaves out hair and makeup, stationery and guest rooms. If you pay for rooms, 20 to 30 bedrooms at an estimated €300 to €800 a night is €6,000 to €24,000 a night, and Ballyfin's rooms start above that band. Yes, you can rent a whole castle in Ireland for a wedding. Exclusive-hire estates such as Ballyfin Demesne and Bellingham Castle, and Luttrellstown Castle on certain dates, give you the entire property, with no other guests or events. You pay a hire fee plus catering plus rooms, so it costs more than a castle hotel.

Castle hotels such as Cabra, Markree and Dromoland price per head, stay open to other guests, and work well for 80 to 150 guests. Ask every castle two things early: whether exclusive use is available on your date, and the minimum spend or guest count to secure it. Bellingham's seasonal minimums run from about 50 guests midweek to 140 or more on peak weekends.

The best place in Ireland for a castle wedding depends on your guests. The east, around Dublin, is the easiest for people flying in: Luttrellstown, Bellingham and Slane Castle are within an hour or so of Dublin Airport. The west has the Atlantic coast, and the midlands are home to Ballyfin and Cabra.
