What is semi-formal wedding attire?

Semi-formal wedding attire is a suit and tie for men and a midi or cocktail dress, a tailored jumpsuit or dressy separates for women. It is dressier than office clothes and slightly less dressy than formal wear, so leave the tuxedo, the ballgown and the jeans at home.

At a glance

Semi-formal wedding attire is a suit and tie for men, and a midi or cocktail dress, a tailored jumpsuit or dressy separates for women. It sits below formal: no tuxedo, no ballgown, and nothing as casual as jeans. Dress up a notch for an evening wedding, match the fabric to the season (linen in summer, velvet in winter) and avoid white or ivory. The code stated on the invitation is always the final word.

What does semi-formal mean for a wedding?

Semi-formal for a wedding means a suit and tie for men and a cocktail dress, a midi dress, a jumpsuit or dressy separates for women. The Emily Post Institute describes semi-formal as more formal than what you would wear to an office and slightly less formal than what you would wear to a formal event.

Use the invitation, the time of day and the venue to judge how dressed up to go:

  • The invitation. The code stated on it is the final word. If it is unclear, check the couple's wedding website or ask them.
  • The time of day. Emily Post says to err on the side of formality when the event is later than 6 in the evening, and its wedding guest page lists a dark suit for a semi-formal evening.
  • The venue. Grass, sand and cobbles decide your shoes, and a beach afternoon is lighter in tone than a city evening.

Couples still choosing their wording can start from the semi-formal dress code page.

What is semi-formal wedding attire for women?

Semi-formal wedding attire for women is a midi or tea-length dress, a cocktail dress, a tailored jumpsuit or dressy separates such as a skirt with a fine top. The safest semi-formal wedding guest dress is a midi in silk, satin, crepe or high-end cotton, in most colours, though not white, ivory or a shade close to a bridal palette.

  • Length: midi or tea-length is the classic. A floor-length dress in silk or crepe also works, provided it has no train, heavy beading or voluminous skirt.
  • Jumpsuits: a tailored silk jumpsuit is dressy enough, and easier to walk in than a gown on grass, sand or cobbles, so it suits a destination wedding.
  • Shoes: heeled sandals, block heels, closed-toe pumps or dressy flats. Save stilettos for indoor venues, because a thin heel sinks into grass and catches in cobbles.
  • Accessories: one statement piece is enough: a clutch, a pair of earrings or a necklace.

What is semi-formal wedding attire for men?

Semi-formal wedding attire for men is a suit and tie. Navy or charcoal wool with a white or pale blue shirt is the classic choice. A tailored sport coat with contrasting trousers and a tie also qualifies, and a linen suit works in summer or at the beach. A tuxedo is too formal.

OptionWhat to wearWhere it fits
Full suitNavy or charcoal wool, white or pale blue shirt, silk tieAlmost every semi-formal wedding
Sport coat and trousersNavy or grey coat, trousers in beige, tan, grey or light navy, shirt and tieDaytime weddings and less formal venues
Linen suitTan, stone or light navy, crisp white shirtSummer and beach weddings

Wear leather oxfords or derbies in most settings and loafers at a beach or daytime wedding, and avoid rubber soles. Plan on a tie: Emily Post and The Knot both list one for semi-formal. With a linen suit you can leave it off if the invitation suggests it.

Is semi-formal the same as cocktail attire?

Semi-formal is not quite the same as cocktail attire, but the two overlap and one outfit can pass for both. Where a couple draws a line, cocktail is the dressier: The Knot's dress code guide ranks cocktail one step above semi-formal and describes semi-formal as less embellished. The Emily Post Institute lists a cocktail dress as semi-formal wear.

Four neighbouring codes, from most to least formal, summarised from The Knot's guide:

CodeWomenMen
FormalFloor-length dress, sleek jumpsuit or elegant cocktail dressDark suit and tie; no tuxedo required
CocktailFormal midi or shorter dress, bold accessoriesSuit and tie, crisp black or white shirt
Semi-formalMidi dress, wrap dress or jumpsuit, fewer statement accessoriesSuit, or jacket and dress trousers, plus a tie
Dressy casualUpscale dress, jumpsuit or matching setBlazer and khakis, button-down shirt, tie not required

Above formal come the tuxedo codes, such as black tie. Below dressy casual is casual.

What do you wear to a semi-formal wedding in summer, fall or winter?

A semi-formal wedding calls for the same outfits all year, in fabrics and colours that change with the season. Wear linen and lighter colours in summer, wool in richer tones such as burgundy or forest green in fall, and darker wool, velvet or heavy crepe in winter.

SeasonWomenMen
SpringPastel or mid-tone dress, heeled sandalsLight wool suit, leather loafers
SummerSilk midi or dressy jumpsuit in a lighter colourLinen suit or sport coat
Autumn (fall)Heavier-weight dress or separates in burgundy, forest green, camel or rust, with boots or heeled pumpsWool suit
WinterVelvet or heavy crepe in a darker shadeDarker wool suit

Add a cardigan or light jacket for a spring evening. In winter, bring a coat you do not mind being seen in, because you will wear it to and from the venue. For a wedding abroad, the destination wedding packing list covers the rest of the suitcase.

What should you not wear to a semi-formal wedding?

Do not wear white or ivory to a semi-formal wedding: it is never appropriate as a guest. Avoid both ends of the scale as well. Jeans, T-shirts and sneakers are too casual, and a ballgown or a tuxedo is too formal.

  • A dress with a train overshoots semi-formal.
  • An untucked shirt, or no tie at an indoor wedding, undershoots it.
  • Stilettos sink into grass at outdoor venues. Wear block heels.
  • Flip-flops are wrong even at a beach wedding. Wear dressy sandals.
  • An extremely bright or flashy outfit pulls focus from the couple.

Common questions

What should I wear to a semi-formal wedding?+

Wear a suit and tie, or a midi dress, cocktail dress, tailored jumpsuit or dressy separates, to a semi-formal wedding. Dress up a notch if it starts after 6 in the evening, choose shoes that suit the ground at the venue, and skip white, ivory, jeans and sneakers.

What is the difference between semi-formal and formal wedding attire?+

Formal wedding attire is dressier than semi-formal: a long dress and a tuxedo become options, though neither is required. For a formal evening wedding, the Emily Post Institute lists a long evening dress or dressy cocktail dress for women and a tuxedo or dark suit for men. For a semi-formal evening it lists a cocktail dress or dressy pantsuit, and a dark suit.

Can you wear black to a semi-formal wedding?+

Yes, you can wear black to a semi-formal wedding, and it suits evening and city weddings best. The Emily Post Institute's attire guide lists a little black dress as semi-formal wear. Avoid full black at a daytime beach wedding, where the tone is lighter; a navy or deep jewel-tone dress is more versatile.

Can you wear jeans to a semi-formal wedding?+

No. Jeans are too casual for a semi-formal wedding, and so are T-shirts and sneakers. The Emily Post Institute's attire guide lists jeans only under casual and dressy casual. The most relaxed outfit that still fits semi-formal is a well-fitted blazer with tailored chinos, a crisp shirt and a silk tie.

What do you wear to a semi-formal summer or beach wedding?+

For a semi-formal summer or beach wedding, wear linen or another breathable fabric in a lighter colour. Men can wear a linen suit in tan, stone or light navy with a white shirt and loafers. Women can wear a silk midi or a dressy jumpsuit with block heels or dressy sandals. Skip stilettos and flip-flops, and bring a light layer for the evening.

Can you wear a long dress to a semi-formal wedding?+

Yes. A midi or tea-length dress is the classic choice for a semi-formal wedding, but a longer dress is fine provided it is not a full ballgown. A floor-length dress in silk or crepe works. Avoid a visible train, heavy beading or a voluminous skirt.
