The worst “romantic dinner” in the Maldives (and probably of my life) My partner and I booked what was supposed to be a romantic beach dinner in Tulusdhoo, Maldives. The setting itself was beautiful, yes. The experience, however, was absolutely terrible. Two days earlier, we went there in person, were shown the Wednesday menu, and agreed to pay $60 in total ($30 per person). At no point — and I truly mean at no point — were we informed that the kitchen closed at 8:30 PM. We arrived at 8:45 PM, and instead of a welcome, we were met with a blunt NO, along with a rude and unpleasant attitude from the staff, telling us the kitchen was already closed and that we would not be served. When we asked for our money back, the owner came out and said it was “no problem” and that we could still have dinner, but warned us that the restaurant would close in 40 minutes. Romance with a countdown. From that moment on, everything went downhill: • The starter and the main course were brought at the same time, like in a school cafeteria. • The food was cold, tasteless, and clearly rushed. • The staff kept constantly pressuring us with “Are you finished yet?” • The dessert remains a mystery to this day. We are still trying to figure out what it actually was — it looked like a coconut cake, but even that is uncertain. But by far the worst part was not the food. It was the attitude of the staff: rude, unwelcoming, and constantly making us feel like we were a nuisance. The final straw was when the owner came over asking if we were done and requesting payment while we were still chewing our dessert, and immediately after that they began collecting the candles, lights, and all the decorations around us while we were still seated at the table. After paying the full $60, we felt so uncomfortable that we ended up getting up and leaving without even being able to finish our drinks in peace. As if that weren’t enough, when paying the remaining $40, the owner stood right in front of us and checked the banknotes as if they were fake, one by one, for quite some time. And when I say some time, I mean a good 30 seconds, carefully inspecting them with obvious suspicion. A very ugly, uncomfortable, and completely unnecessary gesture that perfectly capped off an already disgraceful experience. Our stay in the Maldives has been amazing, but this “romantic dinner” — the most expensive one we had here — turned out to be the worst dining experience of our entire trip. Not because of the food, but because of the complete lack of professionalism, hospitality, and basic respect for customers. Honestly, we were left shocked and incredulous by the attitude of these people. If you are looking for a calm, romantic, and well-cared-for experience: stay far away from this place. If you want to feel rushed, uncomfortable, and treated with suspicion while being charged the full price: this is the place for you. ⭐️ (and only because zero stars is not an option)
